The origins of Reiki

Reiki, pronounced Ray-key, is a Japanese form of alternative medicine called energy healing. The word Reiki is made up of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.” The exact origins are clouded in mystery, some say it goes back 100 years, others say 1000 plus. One fact remains: one individual, Mikao Usui, during the 1920s, had a marked spiritual experience, developed a unique style of Reiki, and chose to share it with as many people as he could. As this was wartime and as his country was plagued with deadly quakes and tsunamis, people needed something to ease pain and worry and stress. Fast forward to now, Mikao’s style of Reiki, called Usui Reiki, is the most widely practiced today.

How does Reiki work?

Reiki practitioners use a technique called palm healing or hands-on healing.   With this technique,  a “universal energy” is said to be transferred through the palms of the practitioner to the patient in order to encourage emotional or physical healing. It is administered by “laying on hands”.  And, it is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If your life force energy is low, then it is believed that you will be more likely to feel stress or have a depressed immune system which opens one up for sickness.  If your life force energy is high, then you are more capable of easing stress, controlling mood, and more likely to ward off illness and disease.
